In Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax, the Lorax is on a mission to
speak for the trees as the Once-ler wreaks havoc on the landscape in the name
of commerce. Though written for children in 1971, the timeless message of the
story continues to resonate across all ages.
The story serves as an environmental warning to beware of
corporate greed and protect that which cannot speak for itself. As the Once-ler
moves into the land dotted with Truffula trees, the temptation to use the trees for profit is too great despite the warnings from the Lorax. The land that
started as lush and vibrant soon deteriorates into a gray and desolate
landscape devoid of life.
The Truffula trees take center stage in this story. They
are colorful, silky and add life to the valley that is home to the Swomee-Swans
and Humming-Fish. The rainbow colored hats and feathery details on the
Valentino Spring 2018 runway mirror the texture and appearance of the Truffula
trees.
The Valentino collection appears to be fashion’s
embodiment of the book’s illustrations. The designs and accessories are bright
and carefree, offering a moment of hope and whimsy even if the world around may
have its darkness and challenges.
Though the story of the Lorax may seem to end as the last
Truffula tree is chopped to the ground, there is a seed of a hope.
“But now," says the Once-ler, “now that you’re here, the
word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear. Unless someone like you cares a whole
awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
That seed of hope can blossom into a new tomorrow when
someone takes the time to care. As we celebrate Earth Day this week, what better time than now to consider the impact we can make? Whether it’s the environment or another cause
close to your heart, you have the power to inspire change.
